Jen's Top 10 Movies of All Time

Okay, so Maria inspired me to list my favorite movies with her list of top 10 scary movies. Here are my all-time favorite, most of which are NOT scary. This list was really hard to make, considering I am passionate about so many dang movies!

#10

I'm not sure how many people have even seen The Lost Boys sine its release in 1987, but it is my idea of a great vampire movie. These vampires don't sparkle. They're cruel and dangerous. I was young when this came out and admittedly had a huge crush on Corey Haim (most girls of the 90's did). There is a bit of humor in this one, mixed with (light) horror and adventure.

#9

I am a giant Star Wars fan. When having to pick just one to say is my favorite, I think Return of the Jedi (Episode VI) is the one. While I think Episodes I-III are still good, the newness of them has worn off and I don't find myself watching them over and over like I do the first three (or rather the last). I was even younger when this one came out, so maybe I was drawn by the adorable little Ewoks and the fact that Princess Leia came to Hans' rescue. Plus Luke gets to finally see his father's face and the guy turns out to look way less harmless than we could ever imagine. Regardless, I thought it was a nice wrap-up to the series (at the time anyway).

#8

Yeah, I'm cheating on this one. I am in love with all of the Harry Potter movies. When trying to pick a favorite, I kept finding fault with each. Before Harry and the gang drop out of school, the movies were happy, although at times a bit cheesy. The last three or so are pretty dark, but full of emotion and adventure. The thing that always cracks me up is I remember renting the first HP for my step-daughters when they were young and I thought the show was dumb and boring. Fast forward to many years later, when I finally read the books, and I felt 100% differently about the movies. Although I've only been part of one HP marathon, this would be a series I would love to just take a day or two off for fun and watch them all back-to-back. J. K. Rowling is my hero, and a total genius for creating this world of wizards and muggles.

#7

Easy A should probably be closer to the top of my list, but there are some pretty big contenders coming up next. The first time I saw this movie I was hooked. Emma Stone is a brilliant actress and does funny better than anyone I've seen (notice she appears again second to my top favorite). There are so many one-liners that have me rolling in this movie, plus it has an 80's vibe that no other movie has yet to accomplish since the creation of the Brat Pack movies.

#6

I think it's safe to say E.T. would make a lot of people's top 10 list. It's heartwarming, adventurous, humorous and just plain great all around. I am the same age as Drew Barrymore, so I was pretty young when I first saw this in the theatre. Thankfully my children appreciate this one and we watch it together quite often. Is there any better feeling than the scene when the boys are lifted into the air on their bikes and the violins start playing?

#5

Super 8 was one of those movies that quietly went through the theaters with very few people getting excited about it. I blame the terrible trailers. I know they were trying to keep the big secret from being revealed, but I thought it was going to be a horror movie and had no interest at first. This movie is definitely a mash-up between E.T. and The Goonies with the young boys' adventure and paranormal aspect mixed together (I won't ruin it for those of you who haven't seen it yet but will after hearing how awesome it is). Although I'm not 100% pleased with the very end of it, this movie touched my heart in ways that only Steven Spielberg can.

#4

Oh, Sixteen Candles, how many ways do I love thee? I first saw this when in junior high and USA came to be on cable. Up until I was married, I had never seen anything other than the made-for-TV version and was surprised by some of the extras I missed. I haven't necessarily heard a lot of guys say they love this movie, but really think it hits home for those of us who were young, awkward and in love at one time. Yes, I had a ginormous crush on Michael Shoeffling (Jake) at the time, and went on to have a major crush on Anthony Michael Hall after Weird Science (which honestly should have made this list but somehow got pushed out). There are so many hilarious scenes in this movie, yet it is written with a lot of heart as well.

#3

After first seeing Shaun of the Dead, it immediately made it into my top 10 list. A lot of people won't get the off-humor (I sometimes don't even understand what British people are saying) or appreciate the whole zombie theme. But in my world, this is one of the best movies ever written. Strangely enough, the ending makes me cry like a baby every time. If you haven't seen it, you will have to watch to understand why! Simon Pegg is among the comedic geniuses of our time. His movie Paul is also one of those that would have been on my list if this were the top 20.

#2

Hands down, one of the funniest movies of all time. Genius. Zombieland does a great job of combining adventure with comedy and horror, all each having just the right amount in the mix. Honestly, it still kind of bothers me that Jesse Eisenberg's character makes fun of irritable bowl syndrome, because if you have the disease, it makes your life miserable. It's kind of like making fun of someone for having diabetes. Regardless, I was able to look past that and appreciate all the other funny points, like the appearance of Bill Murray (one of my top 10 favorite actors, who is also in Ghostbusters, another movie to make my top 20). This movie actually has two of my other favorite actors, Emma Stone and Woody Harrelson. If you don't mind seeing zombies in a non-jump-out-at-you kind of way, I recommend renting this one.

#1

I swear there are so many boys' adventures on this list that you would think I was once a tom-boy (but I really wasn't). The Goonies always has and always will hold a special place in my heart. I think I was about the same age as Mikey when it first came out, so maybe I felt like I could see myself in this adventure with the kids. As with most of my other favorites, Goonies has the recipe for greatness: comedy + adventure + heart-warming.

That was actually really hard. I feel like I left out some of my favorites, like X-Files, Indiana Jones, Sex and the City, and the others I mentioned earlier. It almost feels like not telling a child you love them. I guess I'll always be one of those people who says to nearly every other movie, "That's my favorite!" Maybe I'll just have to keep lists going until I reach 100.

Did any of these make your top 10?

Top 10 Scary Movies According to Me

I love me a scary movie. I've been watching them since I came to America, when I was four years old. I'm not kidding, my family did not understand the whole rating system. The first movie I went to see was Jaws (my eyes were closed through the whole thing). Anyway, I had no choice but to love them, even though I watched them through my fingers, or my family would tease me to death about being a big chicken.

The next ten movies might not be all that scary today, but these movies made a huge impact on me at the time.

Number 10
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
A man who can come into your dreams and kill you? Add to that a burned face and knives for fingers. YIKES!!! I did not want to fall asleep after watching this movie. Oh and that scene with Johnny Depp. I didn't know the human body had that much blood in it. I can still remember the song: "1,2 Freddy's coming for you..." To this day, I still have nightmares with him.

Number 9
HELLRAISER
Just look at his face and tell me he doesn't scare you. He has to be the scariest evil looking man ever. I've been stabbed by a needle before, so I know this had to hurt him. To think this demon can go after you, if you escape from their sadomasochistic hell, was too much for my young mind to handle at the time. Oh who am I kidding, I still can't handle it.

Number 8
STEPHEN KING'S IT
Anybody who knows me, knows I am extremely scared of clowns, but somehow I still managed to watch this movie. And yes, it gave me nightmares for weeks, and actually made me even more scared of clowns. Even as I write this, I can't look at the picture. Lets move on.

Number 7
THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE
A crazy family who will torture you to death. NO THANK YOU!!! The worst part was, they kept reminding us this movie was based on a true story. Years later, I found out it was based so loosely on a true story that you can say it was pure fiction. But as a kid, I was so scared to think this scary family was out there killing people. I was even scared to ever go to Texas. You can't blame me, I didn't want anybody using my skin for a mask.

Number 6
THE EXORCIST
Okay, I know most people would nominate this film as their number 1 choice, but the truth is I"m not really a fan of this movie. I put it on the list because of what it did to me as child and teenager. I had heard so many horrible things about this movie that I could not watch it. My brother used to think it was funny to put it on my TV and hide the remote, causing me to have crying panic attacks. As an Adult, I finally took a chance and watched it. Yes there were some gross scenes, but most of all, I was bored and thought it wasn't scary at all.

Number 5
THE STRANGERS
This movie freaked me out. Mostly because it could really happen. I still remember the most disturbing scene was when Liv Tyler was all beat up, and she asked the strangers why they are torturing them, and the girl with that freaky mask tilts her head to the side and says, "Because you were home." I still get goosebumps when I think of it.

Number 4
THE FOURTH KIND
The fact that this movie played the real footage, alongside the movie scenes, really blew my mind. I'm not sure if what we saw in this film was real, and to be honest, I don't like to think about it, mostly because I don't want the aliens to come after me. Real or not, this movie still messes with my head.

Number 3
POLTERGEIST
This movie is the reason I am deadly afraid of clowns. That scene with the clown doll standing behind the boy has ruined the circus for me forever. This movie also made me afraid of buying a house. And yes, when my husband I bought our house, which happened to be built a couple of years before, I asked "Are you sure this land wasn't a burial ground, and if it was, did you move the bodies?" Lets just say I received a lot of weird looks that day. By the way, the answer was "No, it was not a burial ground." Whew!!!

Number 2
SHINING
I have one word for you "redrum." That little boy on the bike freaked me out more than Jack Nicholson did. And don't even get me started on the twins. This movie is filled with scenes that mess with your head. You start to feel like Jack at one point. My favorite scene will always be, Jack chopping the door to pieces with an ax, and then sticking his head through the hole while saying "Here's Johnny!"

Number 1
THE EVIL DEAD
This is the only movie, that made me actually exit the movie theatre, because I was so scared. But you can't blame me, I was 8 years old. There's a scene with a tree violating a girl that still FREAKS me out. A couple of years ago, I decided to give it a try and watch it again. Maybe I thought I would laugh at how corny it was, but I didn't. I had to have my husband turn it off half way through. To this day, I can't watch this film at all, not even one little scene. I don't even like to talk about it, especially since my husband likes to do the evil voices to scare me.

Well those were my top ten. Tell me which scary movie messed with your head so bad, that you still have nightmares about it.

Movie Review: Paranormal Activity 4

Cast:
Katie Featherston: Katie
Kathryn Newton: Alex
Matt Shively: Ben
Brad Allen: Robbie

Runtime: 1hr 35mins
Rated: R

Plot: Five years after, Katie murdered her sister and disappeared with her baby nephew Hunter, they are back and live across the street from Alex and her family. The little boy Robbie, from across the street, is weird and has a strange affect on Alex's little brother Wyatt. Spooky things start to happen in Alex's house, which she films using her laptop and phone. What Alex doesn't know is the connection she has to Katie and Hunter.

In My Opinion: Having seen the the last three movies, I knew exactly what to expect from this one, but yet, I somehow still walked into the movie thinking, I was going to experience something different. Maybe something that would bring back the terror I felt watching the first two. Okay, I wasn't scared with the first one while I watched it, but days later, little things would freak me out, like a door opening by itself. It never did, but I kept imagining it did. Anyway, I was looking for this movie to scare me in the same way. But it didn't. If anything, it made me laugh more than the other three did. I think the biggest reason this movie is not as powerful as the first two were, is because of the third film that let all the viewers know it was not an evil demon spirit we were dealing with, but instead a witch's cult. That ruined the whole Paranormal Activity franchise for me. It's so much scarier when it's an evil ghost trying to mess with the home owners. Now the creators of Paranormal Activity 4 do still keep the suspense alive with the night scenes that the viewer sits through waiting for something to happen. I know I sat in the movie theatre looking at the screen intensely waiting to see something odd to appear making my stomach tie in knots. And then boom something happens, and I yawn. Okay, I jumped a couple of times. But overall, I was bored. I also figured out the twist way before the film exposed it. My husband hates when I do that. Yes, I ruined The Sixth Sense for him and he will never forgive me. There could be a 5th part, but I'm not sure I will see it. I think I'm done with the Paranormal Activity movies.

It's Rating Time

Story: 2 out of 5 stars: It's more of the same with a silly twist.

The Acting: 4 out of 5 stars: It's actually pretty good and might be the only thing I liked.

The Scare Factor: 2 out of 5: It's the silence followed by sounds, any house would make, that does it.

Overall Rating: 2 out of 5 stars.

Bottom line: If you want more of the same, go see this movie. If not, I suggest you skip it, and watch it next year around this time on DVD.

Season Premiere of Walking Dead & My Experience Walking With the Dead

WARNING: DISTURBING PICTURES & WALKING DEAD SEASON 3 SPOILERS AHEAD

My weekend was filled with people pretending to be rotting corpses. And I loved every minute of it.

Saturday I was part of a large gathering of zombies in Minneapolis for the eighth annual Zombie Pub Crawl. One word sums it all up: amazing. I haven't heard a final head count, but they were expecting up to 30,000 people to participate. Thanks to my cousin, I was fortunate  to find an amazing makeup artist to turn me into the undead. She did such an excellent job that I was afraid I was terrifying the handful of small children we saw that night. My own 12-year-old daughter made me promise never to show her a picture of me that night again. When I looked into the mirror that night I couldn't stop laughing. I didn't even recognize myself. Personally I didn't put a lot of effort into my costume aside from the makeup and white-out contacts. I made t-shirts advertising my zombie book and ripped up a pair of jeans. But there were hundreds of genius ideas floating around that night. I think I spent half the time just sitting back and watching the parade of undead pass by. Downtown Minneapolis certainly became a hubbub for zombie fans. Everywhere we went there was live music, including one of my old favorites, The Gin Blossoms. There was even a large pile of bubbles we got to play in. Our group started at 2 p.m. so by 11:00 we were done for. Next year I plan to pace myself a little more and take everything in.

With makeup artist Stephanie Molin
The contacts made the look!
Chris Hardwick of Talking Dead summed up last night’s season premiere best with his opening monologue. “Holy shit!” There wasn't any dialogue the first five minutes of the show, then the opening credits started with new pictures to the same music diehard fans have come to adore. Not only is this an entertaining show, but the photography and music is so well done, it's like a piece of fine art.

Right off the bat, we learned the gang has been traveling around for a good while based on Carl’s sudden puberty, Hershel’s beard and Lori’s now bulging stomach. And Lori is worried her baby is a demon (which is probably is if Shane was really the baby daddy) or it's dead, or she will die in child birth and turn. Most Walking Dead fans don't care for Lori anyway and I think we'd all love to see that baby chew its way out of her womb.

Can we talk about the zombies wearing riot gear for a minute? That was the most insane thing ever! Since their mouths were covered up, they weren't as big of a threat except that they could slow up Rick & Co until the others got to them. I think the writers of this show took complaints of few zombies last season to heart because we saw HOARDS of them last night! And how about the one who had the skin ripped off his face? Nasty.

When the last few minutes of the show aired and the credits came on, I was in so much shock that I had to rewind my DVR and watch it again. All I could think was, did that really just happen? Was there even a discussion on whether or not it was necessary to cut off Hershel's leg or did Rick completely lose his freaking mind?

In short: Maggie is excited by the slaying and has her eye set on becoming the next Sarah Connor. The romance we all know coming between Daryl and Carol seems to be heating up. Andrea is deathly ill and in her own way is becoming BFF with Michonne (who is a total bad ass). T-Dog had some more lines. Hershel's other hot daughter (the blonde) is a terrible singer and now Carl has the hots for her. Rick is still mad at Lori for being a jezebel and to channel his anger is cutting people's legs off. PLUS now there are other humans in the picture and we know they're all going to die from Rick saying in the previews that he is not going to be a big boy and share the place. And we all know Hershel is going to die--that conveniently placed axe was so not sterile.

via Entertainment Weekly
I think the writers of the show outdid themselves last night. Looks like we're in for the best season ever, folks. What did you think?

Movie Review: Sinister

Cast:
Ethan Hawke: Ellison
Juliet Rylance: Tracy
James Ransone: Deputy
Fred Dalton Thompson: Sheriff

Runtime: 1hr 50 min
Rated: R

Plot: Ellison is a true-crime novelist who hasn't had a hit in ten years. Wanting to spark up his career, he decides to move his family into a house where the prior tenants were mysterioulsly murdered. He hopes that living in the house he will be able to find out what happened and find a lead on where the family's missing daughter is. He does all this without telling his wife the real reason they've moved into this house. Ellison finds 8mm home movies that gives insight and the first notion that more has happened in this house then this family being murdered or just one kid missing. All of this puts his family in the path of a supernatural entity.

In My Opinion: When I saw the the coming attraction for this movie, I thought, another stupid horror movie I don't want to watch. But then I started hearing on TV and the radio how scary this movie is. They actually said "One of the scariest movies ever." I started getting excited for a Friday night date at the movies. I love horror movies and yes I'm the type of girl that watches it through my fingers. So there I was sitting in a packed theatre ready to watch one of the scariest movies ever made. I ate my popcorn, ready to cover my eyes, but as the movie played disappointment began to come over me. This movie was so boring, yes there were a couple of scenes that made me jump, just a couple, but overall it was a huge waste of my time. I even found myself dozing off. There were a lot of things that were not explained like for example why the son had night terrors. The only scary things in this movie are the kids. Well, kids overall can be spooky. Anyway, the "supernatural entity" was not scary at all. In fact his face looked like the mask from the movie Saw without the rosy cheeks. For a minute, I forgot I what I was watching. Basically this movie is about a boogie man who collects kids. I'm sure I've seen this story on an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slyer. This movie proves I should trust my first instinct.

It's Rating Time

The Story: 2 out of 5 star: It's been done before and it getting pretty tired.

The Acting: 5 out of 5 star: It was the only thing that saved this movie. Ethan Hawke is an incredible actor and the kids were pretty good too.

The Scare Factor: 1 out of 5 stars: Besides a couple of scenes that made you jump because things pop out, this movie was not scary at all.

OVERALL RATING: 1.5 out of 5 stars

Bottom line: Skip this movie. I don't think it's even good enough to rent. Wait for it to be on TV.

9 Days Until The Walking Dead Premiere!

WARNING, MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ALL OF SEASON 2

"Darryl" watches the barn burn (via AMC)

Obviously, I love this show. After re-watching the Season 2 finale in preparation for next Sunday, I felt it was necessary to do a more thorough recap. I have heard a lot of complaints that last season got slow at times and there weren't enough zombies. I think everyone needs to keep in mind that the point of a zombie story is to really focus on the way people interact with each other in a time of crisis. The writing and acting on this show is nothing short of amazing.

Last time we saw the gang, Shane turned and Carl shot him just as a hoard of walkers came to the farm. Meanwhile Lori is still wondering why Carl is not in the house (get a clue, woman) and everyone runs away. Rick and Carl burn the barn down for a great special effect. The episode felt shorter than most as you're trying to figure out what happens to each of our beloved characters as they are separated in the dark and go different ways. The first time I saw this I thought Carol had been killed off until Darryl showed up to save her (we all know there is romance coming between the two, and I really hope it takes shape in Season 3). TWICE they made us fear that Andrea was going to die. There were so many "awww" moments, like when Glen told Maggie he loved her, or when the gang all reunited on the highway. Then there were the "oh boy" moments when Rick told them they were all infected and started yelling at them to go on their own way while swinging his gun around. Plus Lori is upset with Rick for killing Shane (her possible baby-daddy) and Carl is crying because his daddy went cray-cray. They are collectively losing their...err...stuff.

This was hands down my favorite episode of The Walking Dead to date. We all know this next season is filled with a kick-ass woman with two pet zombies, a prison, and some crazy guy who has elected himself the governor of...something. The question is: how will the gang survive all of this if they are going crazy and can't get along with each other?

I also had to share this HILARIOUS video I came across: What's More Horrifying than a Walker? For anyone who doesn't know, Dish Network decided to drop AMC and customers who are fans of the show are freaking out. I am just so thankful that we happen to have DIRECTV right now, or I wouldn't find this at all amusing.

If you're on Twitter and you love this show like I do, make sure to follow me so we can talk about the show on October 14th! Jen Naumann on Twitter

Movie Review: Pitch Perfect

Cast:
Anna Kendrick: Beca
Brittany Snow: Chloe
Rebel Wilson: Fat Amy
Anna Camp: Aubrey
Skylar Astin: Jesse
Ben Platt: Benji

Runtime: 1hr 52mins
Rated: PG-13

Plot: Becca is forced to enter Barden University when she would rather head to Los Angeles to be a music producer. But her father is a professor at Barden and can get her a free education. (I wish my father would have had the same job. Yes I'm still paying off my student loans). Anyway, when he sees Becca is not really trying to enjoy her college experience, he promises her she can head to L.A next year if she tries to make an effort and joins a club. She decides to join The Bellas, an all-female cappella group. Becca and a bunch of awkward girls must get it together to beat the all-male cappella group The Trouble Makers in the finals.

In My Opinion:  Okay, if you're in the mood to watch a movie that is totally different with a twist at the end this is not the movie for you. But if you're in the mood to have a good time this is the movie for you. Pitch Perfect is a combination of Glee, Bring it On, and Bridesmaids. Yes, there is even a scene with someone puking. This movie is hilarious. It is filled with awesome one liners that will have you laughing out loud (at least it had the packed audience at my theatre laughing). The music makes this movie even better. As soon as I got home I had to download some of the songs. The only distraction in the movie is Anna Kendrick, who I think was trying a little too hard to channel Bella from Twilight. She's also gotten too skinny she no longer looks good. I kept wanting to feed her a burger. On the other hand, her voice is amazing. I didn't know she had in her. There are a couple cheesy moments, but like I said before, this is not one of those deep movies that will impact your life. This movie is so much fun you won't want it to end. Warning: You will find yourself dancing towards your car.

It's Rating Time
The Story: 4 out of 5 stars: Yes it has been done before, but it's still fun to watch and it will make you feel good.

The Acting: 5 out of 5 stars: All the characters are amazing even the ones that only have one line. However, Rebel Wilson a.k.a Fat Amy steals the show. When she is not on screen you find yourself counting the minutes until she comes back on. Also Hana Mae Lee, who whispers every line and looks like an Asian Winnie Cooper will have you hollering.

The love interest: 4.5 out of 5 stars: He's kind of dorky looking at first, but once you hear him sing he'll make your heart beat a little faster. Besides, who can't love a guy who's favorite movie is The Breakfast Club.

Overall Rating: 4.9 stars

Bottom line: If you're looking to laugh, have fun, cheer, and listen to some good music go see this movie; you won't be disappointed.

Dexter Season 7 Premiere Recap

WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD. If you haven't seen last season yet, don't read ahead. If you haven't watched any season of Dexter, you seriously need to catch up.

Picture via Showtime

I am a super fan of Dexter and couldn't wait for the new season, especially after the epic, holy-crap finale of last season! Not only did we find out Deb in love with her step-brother (ewww), but she caught him at his creepiest moment!

The premiere was every bit as awesome as we hoped it would be. Dexter's recovery with Deb was amusing and, well, so Dexter. Who else can lie on their feet the way he can? His excuse was almost total rubbish, however, especially with Deb being the amazing Lieutenant  she supposedly is (despite the f-bombs she is always dropping). Sorry, but if that were me, the first thing I would have done is take baby Harry away from him. Then there was the story about the murdered detective. I thought it seemed a bit rushed and sloppy. It was so convenient how the crime-scene crew forgot to dust the blinker and how quickly Dexter was able to find the murder this time. Plus I'm not so sure killing someone in the middle of an airport is very believable, especially with the crazy security going on in those places.

From the quick season preview they gave us, we know Deb won't let her discovery rest. And what normal person would? What was with the creepy Dexter made to her while she's soaking in the tub about being "his?" Will he ask her to be his partner in murder? Will she agree to look past the fact that her step-brother is a crazy serial killer? Will he agree to sleep with her (double ewww) to get her to shut up? Or will he just decide it's time to get rid of Deb because she may be even more messed up than he is?

Few television shows out there have stepped up the bar the way Dexter has. It is hard to believe it has already been on the air for seven seasons! I hope it keep going strong. It's one of those twisted shows we love because Dexter himself is so twisted while charming at the same time.

What do you think will happen between Deb & Dexter this season?
